86 360 won't stay running
I just recently bought an 86 dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 with a 360. When I bought it there was no carb. I tried a few differnt used carbs and the truck would run for a few seconds with the choke on and when you open the choke it dies. I got tired of messing with used carbs and don't have a clue how to rebuild one so I went and bought and edelbrock 650 and put it on. The truck still won't stay running. It'll run and sound good for about 15-20 seconds with the choke partly on, if you open it all the way it dies. It sounds and acts just like it is running out of gas. I took the fuel line of and the fuel pump is working. The filter is new, the plugs and wires are new. Any ideas you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Thank you.
hmm, the choke opening up sounds like to much air. You might have a vacuum leak, that causes the air /fuel mixture to not have enough fuel with the choke closed. spray some carb cleaner into the intake when you open the choke, it'll porb. keep running while you spray, based on what you've said. Then you can spray the cleaner around your gaskets and vacuum lines to find the leak (idle rpms change when cleaner is sprayed into the leak point).
Good luck
Good luck
Depending on outside air temperature, those automatic chokes need to stay in position until they release themselves which happens while you're driving, and this can take more than a few minutes but at least 2-3, probably even a little longer. If per chance it releases itself before that time, just let it rev for a good 2-3 minutes, then 'pop' it with the throttle but keep your foot poised in case you need to push a little more fuel down the throat. If, after 5-10 minutes of this it still won't stay running, then you have a problem, but try that first.
I used to just start driving it, got pretty good at it after a while, sometimes it'd still cut off on me.
