If the 318 has 160hp stock, he only got a 20hp gain. Did he rebuild the engine from ground up or just put a couple things on the stock engine. What the diff. between the 518 and A518. I have the overdrive in my truck. Just asking because I'm order my transmission kit. Find a pretty good one from TCI. ABout $250 for everything. Going to keep the 318.

The 318 has 160hp stock, at the crankshaft. He's making 180hp at the rear tires, which equates to 210-220hp at the crank. He's running 32" all terrains, which are slightly larger than stock. He bought a rebuilt long block, but it had a 2bbl manifold and crappy 2bbl heads. It still has the crappy heads, but he's got an edelbrock performer 4bbl manifold, holley 600 carb, comp cam of some slightly lumpier than stock sort, hooker long tube headers and a 3" flowmaster muffler iirc.

It's basically the same setup as my w250, except I've got a 360 with an edelbrock performer cam, A727 tranny (versus his 4-speed manual), and a dana 60 with 35" tires. Mine was a factory 4bbl, so I've got better (marginally) heads - so I hear.

There's alot you can do with the 318. Check out "The Little Mopar That Could", by Steve Dulcich on Carcraft.com. Also, see "Junkyard Jewel: 400hp 318", in Hot Rod by Steve Dulcich. And, if you can get your hands on a copy, Hot Rod, April 1988 has an article titled "318 Street Recipes", by Marlan Davis on some great "bolt on" upgrades for the 318.

Build yourself a respectable 300-400hp 318 and you've got something rare to brag about.

400 hp out of a 318 is easy.

NA recipe: ~10:1 CR, magnum HD heads, M1 intake, lumpy cam, good exhaust, etc. etc. etc.

Or stock build and a blower.

Or do a 390 stroker and build it up. There's a ton of power to be made with them if you're going to completely gut the thing and rebuild it. With the stock displacement, weak compression ratio, and crappy top end you're not going to make much more than 250hp max.

Based on the $4,500 Outlaw said he planned to spend on the engine and tranny, Iassumed it was understood that he was going to completely "gut and rebuild" it - or at least consider it an alternative to swapping the engine out completely for another, like a 360 or 440. I doubt anyone here thinks you can get 300-400hp out of bolt-ons for a 318, but again, we weren't talking about simple bolt-ons in the first place. The "bolt-ons" I mentioned from Marlan Davis' article in Hot Rod were after a mild short-block buildup, which brings us back to the original question, does he do a performance rebuild on the 318 currrently in the vehicle, or swap in a bigger motor?

By the way, Outlaws 318, think about the additional trouble of changing your moniker to "Outlaws440"!
