Default Brake light goes on and off

My brake light started something today. The handbrake isn't on and the brake light comes on then goes out. I already engaged and disengaged the handbrake to see if something was sticking. I hate posting this stuff.

If your sure the handbrake is all the way down or your sure that nothing has slipped down into the mechanism preventing the handbrake from retracting all the way down than it makes me think something else....
I wonder if your handbrake cable is a bit tight andneeds anadjustedment. Or the switch/sensor on the handbrake needs adjusting.

Those are my first thoughts.

Oh ya I'm sure I released the brake.I pressed it and released it a few times just to see if that would would work. Funny, It came on when I was on a incline parked on a slight hill. Who knows lol Thanks for the reply.

I posted a repair on 5/26/07 on the dodge charger, this may also fix your problem too. I went to star oline thru chrysler. The repair is to replace thr E-Brake cable because the cable that came with the car is 1/8 longer, the fix is to replace the cable with a 1/8 inch shorter cable. and car did not throw any codes for the brake system.

Hey Sue -- Did you get your brake light fixed? I'm having a similar problem -- the brake light comes on when applying the brakes (not the hand brake) toward the bottom of a hill -- and when I took it to the dealer they couldn't recreate the problem so they said they couldn'tfix it.

Thanks,
Liz

Liz, I didn't take the car in yet for it. I have to bring it in for a recall pretty soon and I'm going see what they say. I'm going to a dealer near me and not the one where I bought the car. They are proably going to say take back to where you bought it which is 30 miles away. [:@] I bet it's a sensor that's acting crazy and it'll proably be Dodge that has to come up with a fix. It figures that your dealer couldn't recreate the problem, I hate that so much!

On the first Gen Avengers it can also mean that the brake fluid is low ... Check the fluid level ... They use the light for both handbrake and brake troubles

Thanks for the reply, Sue. If they are able to fix yours I'd love to know what they do! I didn't take mine to the dealer I bought it, and had a 1995 Avenger that I never took to the original dealer, sodoubt that will be a problem for you.

Thanks bad venge for the idea. The dealer did at least top off the brake fluid, so I don't think that's the problem.

Sue,
You can take your car to ANY dodge dealer. They cannot tell you to go somewhere else. Its part of every francise contract.
