Default Center Console Ticking Noise

Hey, I have had my avenger for about a day now and suddenly I started noticing a ticking noise emanating from the center console.. It gets louder when I lift the arm rest so I'm pretty sure that's where it is emanating from.. Well since there's nothing in the console I'm sure its coming from under it or in front of the empty console compartment.

The noise sounds like a small flap of plastic sticking out into a rim and hitting each spoke as it goes past. (Like when kidsput a baseball card on the forks ofa bicycle sticking into the spokes of the rim.. only at a slower occurrence rate, like if the bicycle had only 4 spokes) it can also be likened to what a tire sounds like when it has a big nail in it

The sound only happens when the car is movingand while it happens in reverse it is especially noticeable in drive. The engineis quiet and sounds normal when its in park and when the car is not moving so its definitely not the engine itself.

The ticking/clicking noise becomes faster the faster I drive and when I drive3 mph the sound will happen once every 2 seconds. At high speeds (60 and up) the noise almost disappears but i think its because the clicking is so fast that its a constant noise that isn't noticeable.

My car is a 2008 FWD Avenger R/T with all optional packages. If there was an axle running down the center of the car I would think that someone put a zip tie around the axle and forgot to cut the end off making it spin and slap against the console hump which I would check out if I had AWD.. but I think all that's under there is the exhaust system which may be vibrating against the bottom of the car but the sound is more of a timed noise that gets faster and slower depending on speed than a vibration. Plus I would imagine the noise would continue when the car was stopped if it was just an exhaustvibration.

I haven't had the opportunity to jack the car up and crawl under the middle of the car but looking under it as far as I could squeeze in did not help in the aspect of finding a source of the noise.

Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what moving parts are in/under the console that would spin or vibrate with the transmission when moving?

Thanks

Default RE: Center Console Ticking Noise

Here I go answering my own posts again.. But I figured out the problem and fixed it and I thought it might be a good idea to post the solution in case anyone else has the same issue (Doubtful)

The symptoms were a ticking sound in the center console thatbecame louder when the console was opened and the ticking became faster as the car went faster.

The problem was the right emergency brake cable that was supposed to be attached to a lever in the emergency drum brakes fell off and was rubbing on theback sideof the tire lug bolts and was sending the clicking sound through the cable up to the center console.

The solution was to remove the right tire, brake caliper, and rotor then pull the spring that is on the emergency brake cable back so that youI couldslip the cable back into the slot in the emergency brake lever and then remove the center console so that I could re-adjust the emergency brake to a looser position because the cable end was deformed and made the emergency brakes tighter on the right side.

I Can't believe this simple sounding job took me all night because I had to thread a wire through the emergency brake cable spring so that I couldcompress it far enough to slip the end back on the lever.. Threading a wire through a little spring that is hidden behind the drum brakes where I could just barely get my fingers in is a crapload harder than it sounds Plus when I finally got it threaded.. the wire broke... 4 times!!

And yesI could have brought the car to the dealer to figure all this out and fix it but as many little quirks this car has, I love it too much to be without it fora day while the dealer fixes it.. Well plus I don't trust my dealer to fix it right lol

P.S. If you ever need to adjust your emergency brake lever height, you can take out the center console and there is a single screw on the back of the emergency brake handle that adjusts it.
