Obviously guns are recommended because you will have constant pressure, and a quality nozzle when you use them.. but you can achieve professional results using regular spray cans.
If you do buy a compressor and a spray gun remember to get a moisture remover/condenser and install it inline with the hose because compressors tend to spray moisture and sometimes oil from the compressor through the hose from the hotair cooling on exit from the compressor.. And the moisture can kill an otherwise professional spray job.
