Default Check Engine Light and DTC

My Check Engine light just came on. I tried the on-off-on-off-on thing, but the only thing that comes up is "low tire", which comes on anyway, so I don't think I'm doing it right. It's also literally the words and not the P code for low tire (which isn't actually low and is a commonly faulty sensor apparently).

Is there a more detailed set of instructions? The low tire has been on for over a year but the engine light on only today. I have plenty of oil. It's a 2009 if that makes a difference retrieving DTCs.

Gnurl,

If you cannot retrieve the codes yourself perhaps you can take it to any auto parts store to have them pull the codes for you. Most stores perform this free of charge. If you post up the codes after they have retrieved them forum users will be more likely to give you ideas on why it has come on.

Hmmm, now there is no more check engine light. However, it is showing the words to change the oil. Maybe that was it?

Still haven't solved the pcode issue though.

The oil change indicator should not cause the check engine light to go on. It could be that whatever caused the check engine light to go on has been cleared. Many error codes will go away after so many good trips without the same fault.
