If my understannding is right, you should be able to apply 12 volts to the brake trigger wire (what would normally go to the brake light switch?) as well as the main power wire, and get a voltage output from the trailer wire. Then unhook the brake switch wire and use the manual activator, and should also get an output.

I think?

having just recently gotten mine havent had the opportunity to try this. most of my driving is on the interstate anyway, but i'll remember to do this on my next in-town trip
