How did you decide? Lift question

Default How did you decide? Lift question

I will be cranking my torsion bars and adding blocks to my truck tomorrow. How did those of you who added blocks decide what size to go with? Did you just measure the rear after the front was done, or did you put the blocks in and then level the front out to match the rear? I will be adding 285/75/16 tires when it is done.

I dont know the numbers, but if you go above X" in the back; and crank enough in the front, you stress your CV and U joints in the driveline by having them at angles greater than they were designed to operate at. Just a word of caution. It often causes premature wear or failure. Guys crank thier TBs with no adverse effects, but some dont have that luck.

I wont be going overboard on it, thinking around 1.5" in the front and 1" block in the rear, as I have some 1" body lift pucks that I am thinking of adding as well. But at the same time, as you stated going overboard will cause more stress than the driveline can take, so I wont be going over 2" all the way around. I have replaced all of the balljoints, tie rod ends, front hubs, and all of the u-joints within the last 5,000 miles.

didn't wanna start a new thread, what all is needed to crank torsion bars? I just put 275-55-20's on my truck and im rubbing, Just wanna crank the front end up a tad so im not rubbing and even the back out if I have too.

Here's a pic so you get an idea.

Socket set preferably 1/2, Some sort of jack to get your front end off the ground and then after its all done you will need a alignment. All you do is follow your torsion bars back to where they connect to the frame you will see a big bolt head and just find the right socket and start to tighten it . You might need to use pb blaster and let it sit for a couple hrs but mine broke loose with no problem(well I was using my 3/4 in, foot and a half long ratchet so maybe thats why it was easy). Count your turns it will help you get both sides pretty close. Let the truck off the jack, bounce the front end some then measure your distance to be sure both sides are the same or pretty close.

Well, I decided to just crank the front to where I wanted it and then added my blocks. I got the front cranked to match the rear in height to within a 16th of an inch. I went to put a 1" block in the back and wouldn't you know it, one of my new ubolts is cracked! I am heading down to a local trailer supply company to have them order some grade 8 ubolts for me instead of using the standard grade 5 stuff. My 285's are on back order so I cancelled my order and will be getting some 265's instead, I dont wanna stress my 3.9 anymore than I have too!! lol I think 4.10's will be in my very near future along with a LSD unit.

I'm not usually a fan of big wheels but I think those wheels actually look pretty good on your Dakota.
