Default New to forum, upgrade questions

Am sure there are threads out there covering this but couldnt locate any:
Anyways, I have a 04 Quad Cab (PAID OFF!!) with a 4.7 BONE STOCK, with 88K miles.
I am looking at doing needed maint. first (bushings, ball joints, etc) then would like to do what is most needed after that. I am wanting suggestions on what to upgrade first and the best way to do it. I do a little towing, a little off road stuff, but mainly just standard nasty Alaska road crap. Dont need a lot speed, but more wouldnt upset me, better mileage would always be a good thing if possible. Have read that CAI are not all that great for this particular truck but the postings seemed dated, havent heard about performance chips, etc. One thing that does bother me is the timing of transmission shifting. Seems under normal conditions it shifts into drive a bit early and the truck falls on its face.
OK, fire away, sorry to get so long winded but now have a bit of cash and want to put into my truck!
Thanks for any help

Cold air intake is a good start, don't go with a chip buy either a superchips programmer or HCT tuner, if you do ball joints make sure to just do all four to get it out of the way, i would do a full tune up with spark plugs (auto lites) plug wires, distributor cap and rotor. I would also look into a high flow cat by spintech. That is like the basic list of starter mods.

Well wont be able to do dist cap and wires because you have coil packs on each plug so you will just need to do spark plugs. As far as cai get a ebay intake 10 times cheaper but yet works the same as a 300.00 intake(just payin for the name). I got a k&n look alike off of ebay for 38.00 shipped looks exactly like k&n only its tube is fattier so it will suck more air. I am happy with it and so far its the best cheapest mod I have done to my truck.

open the exhaust up even just changing out the muffler to something like a thursh or a good flow master 44 or 60 sounds really nice but arnt crazy loud. as for maintenance moog ball jounts upper and lower is always a great idea. tie rod ends if needed. Ujoints that are fully grease able. being in alaska i would do a set of tank straps they tend to rust out and break fast. and rino line them and let them dry before you install them you will get 4 or 5 more years easy. plugs wires cap rotor (if you have one, if not look in to upgraded coils) if you know someone old school you can index the plugs but it takes lots of time and a kit summit racing has them. I know you can buy spark plugs that do the same thing but trust me you will get about 10 to 15 true horse power by doing it. i did it yo my 5.2 and was shocked after spending 100 on upgrades plugs and wires all these years all i need was a 30 dollar kit.

So far having pretty good luck with finding things, other than the CAI. ONLY $200 plus name brand, dont mind spending the money if I have to but even on ebay I couldnt find anything under $229. anyone with a store name, .com name or something that may have a "no name" brand that is less expensive would be greatly appreciated.

This was just covered in another thread today but ill tell you the same thing. I got a ebay cai its brand name is granatelli(looks just like a K&N) I got it off ebay for 38.00 shipped came with a real k&n filter, gasket, bolts and nuts and even warranty. I am happy with it and only difference I see between mine and my buddys k&n is my tube is fattier other than that they are the same. I looked around at granatelli just to see if they quality stuff and found lots of posts of people having the cai found a few mustang and camaro guys running them. I did a retail search and this is what I found(notice the price!!) http://www.autopartsnetwork.com/cata...ota_year:1998_

I am completely happy with mine I did notice a bottom end gain and maybe a mpg increase but wont know for sure till summer is here(i never calculate winter mpg) If I had to guess right now I say it at least bumped me up 1 mpg.
