Default 00 dakota won't shift out of 4WD. help

i have a 2000 dodge dakota 4WD. It will shift into 4H or 4L but once its in 4WD it won't shift back into 2WD. I have to crawl under my truck and manually push the linkage to get it back into 2WD. do i have to get a new linkage or does this sound like a transfer case issue? i just replaced the linkage gromits a month or so before this happened.. any suggestions would be appreciated

Do you have the mechanical linkage or electronic shift motor? Seems to me if you can manually move the linkage but it does't move on command, something between the 2 points has failed.
