Default Muffler vs. Cat-back

I'm looking to do something with my exhaust soon, and am looking for tips. I'm really just after some sound. If I go the muffler route, I'm interested in having a 22" magnaflow put in. I'd like to keep the truck on the quiet side, but I'd like a nice clean deep tone with some volume.

Does anyone have any experiences with just having a muffler installed? Can it be done without it being hacked up? I don't have the equipment to do it myself so I'd be taking it to a local muffler shop. That's the thing, if I just bought the cat-back system, I wouldnt need to worry about that. However I'm not sure the little gains for a catback are worth it over just having a muffler put in..since the magnaflow system is around $600 which is steep IMO.

If your exhaust system is in good shape, it's probably not worth buying a whole cat-back system. If everything is rusted out and you need to replace it soon anyway, the cat-back makes more sense.

Try to listen to other trucks to find one you like the sound of, then see what that one is running. The cat quiets it down quite a bit, so you might find that a 22" Magnaflow isn't loud enough for you.

Bought a catback system with duals. I got it off ebay and came with a magnaflow. I think was 230 for it... Had nice little bark after the packing got hot and set in place..

This was my 98 with the 5.2 in it... Sounded good till one day I got the idea to try it with no muffler just the cat and about a foot of pipe.. I only have an in cab vid of that sound but sounded pretty mean! I ended up leaving that way

no muffler inside cab

Wow that 318 sounded awesome with no muffler, the sound really changes through all the rpms! Magnaflow sounded good too though..nice and deep but clear sounding. I have a 4.7 so they may sound completely different

The 4.7 will be a little bit more raspy. They sound just as good tho.

Ah, rasp and that popping when you let off the gas is what I don't want to hear. I think I'd be happy with a magnaflow.

I was also thinking borla pro xs. Not many good videos of them on 4.7's I could find though

I had a magnaflow on my 4.7. Sounded great. I replaced a flowrasper that sounded like dog poop.

I think I'm a bit afraid of getting something too loud and regretting it, but I could always get used to it. I think I'd regret more getting something too quiet and wishing it was louder, lol. So I'm back and forth on 18" or 22" magnaflow.

I'm getting ready to buy a muffler and have decided on a 22" Magnaflow. It may be a little quiet but I like a quiet deep tone slightly louder than stock.

Looking at the dimensions though, is a 5"x11" gonna fit up there? They sell a kit for Durangos that uses a 22" 5x11 ( only dimensions a 22" comes in ) Also I know its 2.5" pipe but looking at the stock muffler its hard to tell if I'd need center in or offset in. I know I need offset out.
