Checking out the little annoying oil drips on my 2001 Dakota 4.7 105,000 miles. A few driYep thats gear oil.ps on the drivers side and a few on the passenger side. On the passenger side wet on the CV shaft where it comes out the front dif. A little taste of the oil on the floor.Yep that’s gear oil. Drivers side it pretty wet where the shaft comes out of the rack. Doesn’t taste like engine oil must be the atf+4 in the power steering. I’ve haven’t tasted that. I’ve got some weeping from behind the front pulley also. No drips yet. Looks like some summer projects. I hate drips on my garage floor. The research starts on how to remedy.
Well, gear oil stinks so bad, you don't need to taste it to tell what it is.
Try working on a 1-ton rear diff all day, and then going to the gas station for a pack of smokes....... I got some REALLY curious looks, and folks stayed FAR away from me. One guy went so far as to suggest I take a shower......

How about the old sur-grips from the 1950's to the early 70's when they used the whale oil extract as a friction mollifier? Talk about a strong smell.
