Default CAI and Exhaust- No power gain whatsoeva

Shouldn't i see some sort of power gain after adding K&N CAI, and flowmaster 40 series dualed from the muffler back??

I have seen no change in power. Actually, the truck runs worse! Someone, anyone..?!?!?!

i dont know. I have read a little about it, but dont really know how to check. I havea 2003 sport, 4.7l, 2wd, manual trans. I added exhaust too, but didn't see any improvement either. I have always thought, to make more power.....move more air. But nothing i do changes power.

When you say "CAI" do you mean a short ram intake that draws hot engine air, or an intake that draws air from somewhere outside the engine compartment?

And I don't know what everyone's lust for dual exhaust is - it adds weight you don't need and unless you size the pipes correctly (2" max for stock 4.7) you're actually going to lose torque.

I think it depends on the engine Jonny. Some Engines see gains from bolt ons, some don't. I think the 4.7 flows well from the factory, ie, no gains. As I stated many times before, I come from Nissans which the factory tunes down in the intake and exhaust for the sake of noise. Honda however is very effecient from the factory so Honda owners see no gains or negative gains from bolt ons. I have seen Honda owners get ugly and refuse to admit that their bolt ons did nothing even after I strapped them to a dyno and showed them the curves. I have a 4.7 and will do nothing as far as bolt ons because I belief it is a very effecient design.

On the CAI: After taking many intake air temp readings going into the throttle body, i found that the best location (for the time being) was the passenger side finder well. There is an opening where the stock setup was located to draw air that hasn't been heated by the engine. That was where i got the lowest temp. reading on the air being drawn into the thottle body, so i went with it.

As far as the exhaust goes, it was just the first step to many upgrades. If i am going to eventually purchase headers, throttle body, headers, heads that flow more air, i figured dual exhaust was the way to go. You did raise a concern though...... The muffler shop used 2 3/4" from the muffler back. I researched it before i did the exhaust, and flowmaster claimed that anything after the muffler doesn't matter. Size, or number of pipes..... Its just for looks. Is that inaccurate??? And i dont mean to sound like a smart a$$, but you say anything bigger than 2" on a 4.7 is too much, but my truck came with 2 1/2" from the factory.....[sm=confused06.gif]

Exhaust alone does very little. A CAI does a little more. The choke point is the intake/exhaust porting on the heads. if you add more air and the engine does not use the air more effeciently then what's the point. same with an exhaust system. Clean up the heads with a port & polish and with CAI & exhaust you will see gains. I believe the 4.7 flows well enough without P & P and intake & exhaust mods. If you have effecient flow then the only thing is, to quote Sir Colin Chapman of Lotus is to "add lightness".

I hear what your sayin Jerry. Actually, I have a brother who could do the head work for me on stand-by [sm=smiley20.gif].. But im just not ready to admit that the heads are flowing at maximum capacity yet with the stock set up...... But, i could be wrong. (wouldn't be the first time).
i wonder if there is an easy way for the "home mechanic" to measure the air going into the throttle body, and compare them with specs on the heads....
I don't know....is there anyway that the pcm isn't adjusting to the new upgrades? Almost seems like the fuel/air mix is off. A buddy of mine told me to take it to the dealership and have them set the computer (air and fuel mix) to the new mods.

Cool Chris. The only way to know for sure is get a baseline of stock on a dyno. then dyno each mod at every step. The butt dyno is innacurate. What we "feel" on the butt dyno for a $200.00 is mucho different from actual gains.

Unfortunatly, i dont have the money to take it to a dyno.

I almost wonder if it may be the muffler i put on there. Thats when i first noticed the problem. Come to find out the muffler shop put the cheapest, oldest, series 40 that flowmaster makes on there. I added the CAI (w/ filter located in the fender hole) and of course, it just made the problem more noticable. Just seem like the engine is choking...on exhaustor intake...i dunno.
