for the steering, what you do is, have a buddy sit up in the cab and have him jerk the steering wheel back and forth 6 inches, while he's doing that, go under the truck and look at the steering system, look for worn cmpnents, especially tierod ends

ya, sorry for your loss. I lost my dad in sept of 04. and I got the 88 dak passed down to me. I know what you mean about the sentimental value of the truck. mines the only thing I have left from him.

but anyways, for your steering play it could either be your tie rod ends, or you just might have to tighten up your siginaw box.

and my 99 is goin in thursday to have the tranny looked at. mines making a grinding noise by the torque converter. whats your tranny doing?

Well mine seems to slip going into 1-2 and the last time we had the transmission checked it got it's oil changed and cleaned i believe. they told us that there was shrapnal in the transmission pan. so that tells me it needs to be done haha and soon. and thanks for telling me that about the steering. i'll try as you said.

they charge me45 a hour plus parts....idk what their going rate is proaly 70-80 a hour? watch for coupons, they have them in what we call the penny saver, where they somtimes have a coupon for say $100 off internal tranny service ect..

my guess is that ur gna spend anywhere from 100 to 500 depending on what is wrong, just the bands need adjusted oh idk 100?

i havea brother that works for Cottman here in Houston. Tells me all kinds of stories. Thier moto: "no tranmission leaves here without some kind of work." If there's nothing wrong with the tranny, take it to the back of the shop and throw some metal shavings in the pan and show the customer. "Needs a rebuild. You have metal shavings in your pan!"

Different locations may be not be the same. But as far as me....i would never take it to Cottman.
