brake shoe question
I am wanting to replace my brake shoes on my 1999 2wd dakota, at least I think I should. When I look at the shoes and hold up the ones I bought, they are exactly the same thickness(???) I get this really loud moaning from them whenever I apply the brakes, generally when almost stopped or like when backing out of the driveway. Any ideas on what causes this?? Should I just give them a good spray down with brake cleaner?? Thanks!
i have similar problems. i have the same noise pulling out of the garage if i have to brake right away. they also seem to take more pressure to stop than my other cars. while braking at a light they sometimes take increasing amount of pressure the closer to a complete stop i get. when doing a brake stand only the right tire spins. i'm just putting up with the brakes until i have a better reason to spend money on them, if it ain't broke...
yea i have the same problem on my r/t the squeel is extremly loud at first but and dies down a bit after they warm up but they still do it bad...cleaning them will only prevent it for a day or 2 before dust starts to build up...i just blew them out with compressed air and it worked for about a day or 2 depending on my driving...i believe its just the quality of pads...i think the guy put the ****tiest kind on there the stupid economical ones cheap 20 dollars ones..pretty sure if u get a decent set of shoes for it...it will keep down the dust and shouldnt make any noise, i need to change mine but yea its pretty damn annoying eh?
Go with ceramics guys. My OEM pads were screeching all the time and had plenty of pad left. I got sick of it and went with the ceramics and I have no more noise and better braking. My ABS used to like to kick in with the stockers now it never does. Another great thing about ceramics is that they don't have brake fade it is consistent stopping every time.
check your lubes, alot of moving parts down there.. maybe get your rotors turned, i did that with mine and while i was doing it i found out i had a warpped rotor.. and thats whats causing mine to squeeeel.. so im going with some slotted rotors and cem. pads.. probably pretty expensive but brakes cant be cheap.. there are some ****ty drivers out there..
I've always bought the cheapo $29 pads for almost every car i've owned, but on my dakota i have that same squealing when i first start driving in the morning. It's horrific for about the first 2 or 3 stops then its gone. I was try new slotted rotors also, But i'll try ceramic pads first and see if that helps.
forget thecrossdrilled rotors, just had a lf caliper lock up and you cant get anyone to cut the rotors. went back to stock rotors and going to go with the stock pads too, they seemed to stop better......Dallas 97 slt cc 4x4 5.2 auto

Most of you guys are talking about cross drilled rotors, pads, ect. He's talking about shoes= rear drum brakes.
Like said right above me, the shoes can glaze and that can cause noise. replace them even if they don't look very worn. Make sure you clean everything really good with brake cleaner.
