Hey all...
I've been reading this forum for about 3 weeks since I bought my dakota. Got a 2000 sport quad cab, 4.7, automatic, anti-spin rear. Seems like it's going to bea nice truck! As most guys do, my first post is a question. I apolopize for that!

I've got a noise coming from the right front when braking. Sounds like a metallic clunk. Sometimes it's loud and I can feel it in the pedal, sometimes it can barely be heard. Sometime it doesn't happen. Odd thing is is thaton occasion it will do it as soon asI apply the pedal but most often its as I'm nearing the stop.I've done different things to try to isolate the situation with which it can occur. Using strictly the E brake to stop, it does not do it. Downshifting manually or putting it in neutral has no effect, it still does it. It seems that getting on and off the brakes while coming to a stop can have an effect, but I can't say that for sure.

I had it to my mechanics the other day to have it gone over and get serviced. I told them to look into the issue but not spend too much time on it. They did put it on the lift, pull the wheels and check every connection, joint, etc up front and said they found nothing loose. I don't know that they pulled the caliper, but that would have made sense to me. I may do that myself anyway soon. He did say the lower ball joint has a very slight amount of play, but he doesn't believe that could cause that noise....

Anyone have a similar experience or heard of anything like this before??

welcome, and check your u-joints on your driveshaft... one thing to note from my transmission rebuilder.. chrysler has sloppy rear ends, the play is horrible but nothing to worry about.. so im told

They had found the rear universal bad and replaced it. Had no effect as the sound is definately coming from the right front.

 

might be your bearings pitted, it is posible. you cant just repack your bearings on these I don't think, for they are loaded type I beleav. if the rotors don't look ruff and narle, and the caliper slide pins are fine not a lot of play, and the caliper slides then I would suspect the bearings. it has hapend to me on a different vehicle. if you have play in the bearings the stoping fors of the brakes puts that play into action, and will cause the extra motion and it will cause nois specially wen the play gets more and more.

 

I know the mechanic stated you ball joint had wear, but I would double check maybe it could actually be bearing wear. just a thought. mechanics do make mistake, and over look things.
