Default tranny cooler

Looking to add a transmission cooler to the truck, would you guys recommened running it with the stock cooler, or removing the stock cooler and replacing it with a new heavy duty unit? I was looking at the Haydens, they seem fairly inexspensive.

a trany cooler is ALWAYS a good idea. i have ran them through the stock one seamed to work fine. but the newer dodges they have a check valve in the lines, somewhere. i didnt know what to do with it. a good trany shop should be able to head you in the right direction. here in Wichita,KS, we have major trans parts distutor, a and reds , they might be able to help.

I ran my Hayden in line, after the stock radiator cooler, mounted in front of the condenser. Works great, no issues.

inline through rad cooler first, then the external. if you have room to mount a remote filter, its a good idea too. not sure about the dak, but on the ram the check valve is in the return line (?), just off the radiator, at the front of the engine, right on the frame rail. it looks like a fitting, only about 1 inch long.

By the check valve, do you mean the one way valve on the line before the rad?

The one way valve on the Dak was marked with a flow arrow and then ran to the rad, I assumed that was the input line. I made sure it operated properly. It was not jammed or anything.

I had no problems with the cooler, mounted up nicely. It was afterthe fact when I changed my fluids I ran into a problem...see my other post!

yes, the check valve is the one way valve. i always get it backwards whether its on pressure line (hot) or return (cool). you're right, its on the pressure side to keep the fluid in the cooler and prevent drainback.

sorry about the bad news on the pieces in the trans.. band or clutch or something.

You have to watch it with the one way valves. Something gets in there and the whole valve with clog and call a failure on the trans. When I have my cooler installed the mechanic took out the valve to prevent this from happening.

Any idea how much pressure is actually in the lines? When I was installing the cooler I turned theengine over a few times with out the coil wire attached to confirm the flow of the fluid and it travelled very slowly. Also after changing the tranny fluid I disconnected the cooler line to make sure it was all flowing properly and there was not a lot of pressure but the fluid was moving.
