Default Cam Swap

Has anybody changed thier cams on a 4.7? I've got a set of the 212X's from KRC and thought I could put them in myself. Had a look at the weekend and it looks harder than I thought!
Any tips or advice on the job would be most welcome. An idea of how long you'd expect it to take would also be nice.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

i was curious, i don't have an answer for you, sorry,i saw a "kit" with cams and intake to up the power on a 4.7 to approx 260hp. from what i hear , jeep came out with a 4.7 hp in 2000 or 2001? i looked at the differences in engine specs. and the heads seem to be different. will a cam only upgrade give you the same hp and torque increase? if so, i want one too! i have a 2003 qc 4wd 4.7 ( awd ) 5-45re automatric trans. 30,000miles

I think the H.O. option on the 4.7 consists of different cams and intake manifold which takes the output from 235BHP to 260. I don't think there's any internal mods so you can just go to a dealer and get the alternative parts. I've heard that most of the increase comes form the cams and they are the cheaper part of the package, you just won't get the full benefit without the H.O. manifold.
The cams I'm trying to fit are a set of 212X's from KRC. They should give an extra 40BHP when used with my Superchips programmer (50 if I went for the KRC "flash"). I don't know if this increase is just with the cams and programmer or if they assume you've already done all the minor mods like CAI, Exhaust, 180 Stat and T.B. If its 40 on top of all the other mods it should be around 290BHP, if it includes those mods it will still be around 275 at the crank with an extra 50LBS of torque. The catch it that they cost around 3x as much as factory H.O. cams. The choice is yours!

The reason I'm asking if anyone knows roughly how long it takes to do a cam change on the 4.7, is that I've just been quoted $1000 by an American car specialist over here! KRC told me that it only takes an hour to get each cover off and 15mins to actually change the cam. So I make it around 5hours for the whole job. They don't mention anything about the AC hose that passes over the Left (as you look from the front) bank which looks like it needs to be moved. The official manual and the garage I went to said the AC pump will have to be removed (but not disconnected). They estimated between 6 and 8hours in total. The fact that they charge 50% more per hour for American cars doesn't help! I think I shall try it myself as the truck isn't my everyday ride (couldn't afford it with the price we pay for gas over here) but I'd love to hear from anyone who's done the job themselves and can give me any advice before I start.

Thanks,

Paul

I can't belive that nobody here hasn't either done the job themselves or at least paid somebody else to do it! Quite few of you have the cams listed in their signiture, you know who you are!
