Does anyone know which kind of radar they use for the Photo Radar...I've been nailed twice in the past 6 months by photo radar, they set it up in a mini van on local roads at random places, such a pain!

I found out that radar detectors are legal where I live, unlike where I was a year ago so I am thinking about getting one now but want to make sure it will pick up that stupid Photo Radar crap! I am thinking its lazar?
Im pretty sure those are KA...

Ours are not vans, but little trailer things.. they leave sitting in the middle of the road. The KA is always on.. so you can pick it up from like a mile away lol...

PS> Im going to go take those pics now lol.. brb

As you can see its to the left of the rearview mirror and about the same height of the tint on the windshield, I have the wires running in the headbord into the driverside piller down into the fuse box. (pics of that below), i also took pics of me standing at the window as if a cop was.. you can not see the radar, i also took a pic as if a normal person was talking buy and looking in the front, the radar is hardley noticable, if you wanted to make it even darker, you can and make it to where you want even see it at all... a friend of mine did it with his val. radar and it didnt mess up the signal. (they say if you put it behind tint it wont work right.. mine and his work fine. Also put some pics of the seperate Mute button/blinker light thing lol. I mounted that on the bottom of the dash, so that its within reach so i dont have to reach up and hit the mute on the radar itself, its also set up to where it will blink in my eyes if my radio is to loud and i cant hear the radar.. a bright red flashing light will get my attention.

EDIT: All these pics where taken with a cellphone so.. stfu.

I worked at Best Buy at the time when i bought this radar, so i got a discount it was 399 shelf value got it for.. about 250-270 i think... the hardwire kit you have to buy seperate. It was like 10% though the escort when i worked at Best Buy, but at Car Toys or w/e you buy it from its like 30$ or so.

It cost me about 280 the most to install it like that, i do all my own installs, Radio, Subs, gauges, Radar Ect, i use to be an installer at Best Buy, but i got fired, becuase i called in cuz i coudnt get to work due to about 1/2 foot on snow and ice on the ground and i had to drive like 30 miles over 30 bridges.. and the stupid asses i told didnt remember me calling in, so the GM said i was out of there. When they gave me my check i told him to go **** himself along with the store, and he just sat there. Now i work at NTB making DOUBLE what i was making at Best Buy, and i still do side jobs for some extra money. With Subs and ****.

Damn... i think i got a little off topic, Best Buy is by far the worst place to work. There fulltime posistios consist of 32, 35 max, so they dont have to give you benifits. There partime (me) only gets about 25-30 a week if your lucky about 400 every 2 weeks... pathetic. At NTB i get about 46 hours a week with overtime, Commision, and benifits.. about 800 every 2 weeks.. Just it you wanted to know... lol. [&:]

But ya if you went out and bought it right now, it probably went down in price since the 9500 came out. So it may be like 300 or so.. right now. NOt sure so.. 330 + tax + labor if you have someone install it.. not to bad.. i got a ticket before i had the radar in my old truck (Ranger) going 20 over and it was about 340$... my radar would have paid for itself with that one.

Good price, and covers all the bands even KU (pretty new band) i say go with it, It may not have the range as a Escort or Val or Bell, but it will do the trick. Also the Hardwire kits for those are ALOT cheaper then the Escorts, the cobras use just a simple 12volt power jack, the escorts and **** have a Power plug that looks like a Phoneline type plug, you can hardwire that radar easy with just some extra 18gauge wire.. cut cigarette charger part off and there should be 2 wires a ground and power and maybe a another (accessory wire maybe) just go to the fuse box extend the wires and hardwire it in..

Before you go cutting **** though make sure your cool with it, dont do it cuz i said to do it. I dont want to **** anything up.

im pretty good w/ electrical and soldering so thats not a problem, at least not for me, but what is the range on this one(or something similar) compared to the val or escort or bell?, and i just looked in the fuse box on the durango last night, and it has 2 radio fuses, which one do i plug into, i think one is a 20 amp and the other is a 10????, and yea i had been planning on buying the 10$ hardwire kit, but radioshack doesnt carry it,(so yea ill just break open thecigarette plug and pull thewires, and maybe buy anextra length of the 18ga wire)and the reason for going w/ a cheaper unit is bc im a high school kid working for minimum wage driving a larger truck w/ really drinks up the gas ( not complaining, it was my choice), so i dont have a lot of extra cash for this kind of stuff.

If i had to guess on the range.. i would say 3/4 with Bell, Val, Escort maybe more. Ive picked up a trooper over a bridge about 1 mile up the road over a hill.. Little basterd was trying to be sneaky. Id say with the cobras is decent. Like 1/2mile maybe little more. Good enough to warn you ahead of time. I think mine is to far.. I can be going down 114 at night, any my radar goes crazy and i dont see any cops then like 10 min later i see a cop (im being sarcastic not really 10 min) but i hope you get the point. lol.. [&:]

but ya, you dont have to use the Radio Fuse, you can use anything that turns on when the car is on, either fuse shoudl be ok.. but i would use the 20amp if i had a choice.

And did you no minimum wage went up? You should be getting i think like a 40cent raise or somthing, i work for minimum wage also, but i get commison on top of it so i avg about 10-13$ an hour.. at NTB. But now since we are getting raises its going to be evern better. Woot!

Wait till you start college. Then you will have NO money. Books, semester payments.. pfft.. im about to start college at TCC for basics then go to UNT over here in Texas. I took 1 1/2 year off to work and get a good job going to help me out a little.. but i found out my grandparents have been saving me money for college since i was 5 so.. im pretty much set.. Thank god..
