I would get stuck with 2x4 everywhere. 4x4 is what I need . Roads ice up, couple feet of snow sometimes. I like to go off road too. and break stuff. Big mistake I say...

if you take your time and go slow when you offroad you wownt break stuff. trust me just learn from you r mistakes and it will cost less.
