Help Rear Diff problem
This is my dad's truck he bought it new it has 56000 miles on it and 2500 miles ago i had to have the rear differenial rebuilt. The truck has the limited slip in it and proper maintance done on it (I had the truck for six days and noticed a problem). The dodge dealer did the work and a couple of days ago it started to have the same problem one was i got stoped on a hill and could not get moving again the drive shaft was moving but not the tires. Looking under the truck i found an oily substanice on the fuel cell, exhaust pipe, passanger side shock, and were the pinion comes out of the cases and attaches to the drive shaft and other plaeses. Could this be coming from the differential? How do I check the fluid level? Any help or sugestions would help. Also can i get a new stronger axle that will bolt up without any weilding (i do not trust my weilds)?
You've got a pinion seal out it sounds like. Not the absolute funnest things to replace.
just to check, is the dealer doing the gear lube changes and aware it's got the LSD? If not, you can have all kinds of havoc with the wrong lube.

The dealer rebuilt the limited slip so i would hope they put it in when after they rebuilt it. Do you have to remove the pinion to rebuild the limited slip. The dealer puts a one year warrenty on the rebuild but i do not know if a pinion seal would be covered. I hope it is or else i have to pay to have it rebuilt since the LS is now messed up
this is based on my dually- the chrysler axle may or may not be as easy/hard.
We had to pull the rear driveshaft (2 piece shaft) which involves removing the yoke while not losing all the needle bearings, getting the special yoke socket, removing the pinion nut, removing the pinion yoke, then using a seal remover tool to pop the old seal (or what may or may not be leftof it)out. Mine was all the way down to the outer ring, which explained the1.5 gallons of gear lube lost that was coating the bottom of the bed and frame rails.
