Default Trouble starting truck (noob)

I just bought my 2001 Quad cab on Saturday. When I go to start the truck the engine turns over but it just won't fire up. I let go of the key and try again. Usually on the second try it fires up but sometimes it takes 3 or 4 tries to start. What's wrong with the truck? Is this a simple fix?

This could be soooooo many things. Are there any other odd things the truck is doing? When was the last time it had a tune-up/oil change. I would start there, then make sure you are getting proper fuel pressure. Are you letting the fuel pump prime before starting the truck?

Today I put the key in and turned it to on. I let the it sit for a few seconds to let the fuel pump build up pressure. I then turned the key to start the truck and it started but barely. It's like it wasn't getting enough fuel right away and it hesitated. After a few sputters it fired up and was fine.

So, I guess I have to pretend this truck is like a diesel and let the "glow plugs warm up" before I can start the truck (yes, I know it's not a diesel and I know my truck does not have glow plugs). Is there a fix for my situation? Could it be a clogged fuel filter? Is the pump getting old? The truck has 95k miles.

I doubt it is your fuel filter, but who knows. You would have to replace your fuel pump entirely, as it is one unit.

fuel filter should have been replaced at 70k. If that gets clogged it forces your pump to work harder than it has to and it will will prematurely wear out the pump. Replace the filter ($15 at any parts store) and go from there.

oh and you may consider using good quality gas. Arco sucks and will mess up your fuel system over time. I prefer Chevron or Shell. its all about the additive package they use.

I only use Chevorn in all my vehicles. Even my dirt bike.
I'll try the fuel filter and see what happens.

Unless you know something I don't, the fuel filter is non-replaceable. You have to replace the entire fuel pump assembly, which is in-tank.

You may be right on that. If that is the case, have your fuel pump tested before you fork out the dough to replace it.
