Default Cat Problem

Whenever I drive more than like 50-60 miles my check engine light comes on and it reads a P0420 (Catilitic Converter not preforming up to efficiency). Is there a way to take the cat out without causing the check engine light to come on all the time, or is there a way to fix the damn thing.
Thanks
Matt

Or yank the o2 sensors and clean them. your cat is probably fine, check the o2's 1st. also you can test your cat by measuring the inlet temp & outlet temp... outlet temp should be hotter than the inlet temp by greater than 10* for smog purposes... not sure what the PCM is looking for.

Ok thanks for the advice guys. I have a 4.7 l V-8 with 126,xxx miles on it. It probably could use a cat but i'm leaving for college and need every penny i can keep. I do not think that it is a big deal i just hate looking at a check engine light. I was trying to make it a quick easy repair.
