If you source your own parts, find a local machine shop, etc. you can process a basic 408 shortblockfor ~$2500. However, the costs can ramp up really quick if you choose to replace the supporting parts (heads, throttle body, intake manifold, headers, PCM, etc.) at the same time. I got lucky with this particular truck because the previous owner who is a friend of mine paid the bill for the conversion, a couple of other mutual friends helped him build the engine to help him save a lot of money.
