98 r/t shifting problems
hey everyone, so my98 dak whenever its cold it shifts like a sack of ****, first into second takes a long time and sometimes overdrive doesnt even engage. now it doesnt do it AS much when its up to operating temp but it still does have troubles going from 1-2 and sometimes dropping into overdrive. I see its been about 40k miles since the last tranny flush, would that help clear things up?
hey look it gets cold and everybody's transmission issues are appearing.
One person said they found a leaking seal that caused the 2-3 shift issue, i'm going to run lucas through mine to see what that does, that's all i can recomend right now is just check the fluid level in it and dump some lucas stop leak ($10 at orielly) in it to see what it does.

how cold are you talking? if the temp is really cold outside like below freezing the transmission wont shift into overdrive until it reaches a certain temp. one time last year when it was about 3 degrees out i drove for about 15 minutes going 55 before it finally shifted into OD. i would say if it is relatively normal temp outside it should only act up shifting from 1-2 for like the first 5 minutes or so.
ah maybe thats what it was...i think it was real cold that day it wouldnt shift into od..i still find an odd delay though from 1-2 when it does warm up...maybe im just not used to the way it shifts...thanks anyways guys oh btw those tires look pretty good on those r/t rims there!
yea, until the transmission warms up it wont shift into OD or it can damage the trans. if your truck is still shifting weird into 2nd even after it's warm... you could still have a problem, r/t's seem to have transmission problems more than normal.

I get alot of compliments for them.

Evidently dodge has not made a fix for the OD problem when it is real cold, it sucks to be up north as you have to deal with the OD not engaging until it warms up usually 3 to 5 miles. FYI: Just another bit of info, if you get a tranny flush they don't change the filter which I don't understand. My last fluid change I brought a filter and had them change it. The filter was quite dirty and when I cut it open there was lots of crap in it. They put that filter in there for a reason and when its dirty it does not function properly. I am a retired Aircraft Mechanic an flight engineer and you always change the filters. You would'nt change your engine oil and not the filter!
the r/t's probley have more tranny failure do to the fact its an r/t, so it tends to get rode a lil to hard when it shouldnt be, illl be the the first to say im guilty of it lol
Yeah I agree with them being beat on more than usual, I work mine over alot, I had it rebuilt once and it is rock solid now, as far as 40,000 miles since your last tranny service, I would personally drop the pan, put a drain plug in it while it's off, get as much fluid out of it as possible, change the filter with a mopar filter not some cheap fiber filter, seal it all back up and fill it with valvoline atf-4, skip the lucas, no point in messing up perfectly good new fully synthetic fluid, you may want to change your sensors out if you have a lot of sludge in your pan, that same sludge goes through the sensors and gums up on the inside making them function less effectively.
