bad gas mileage!
i have a 1999 Dakota SLT 5.9 318. i am getting about 11 mpg in town and about 12.5 highway. I dont drive it hard i tend to go the speed limit to get better gas. i am looking for ways to get me better gas. i have 265/75r/16 tires. i am wondering if K&N Air Filters would get me a little better mileage, and also a super chip programmer set to economic setting. I am also up for anything that would help me get better gas mileage.

is it a 5.9L or a 318? the 318 is the 5.2L motor 11 city sounds normal. do you have a brush guard or bug shield that would cause drag at highway speeds? Is the truck lifted? these things will lower your highway gas mileage.
Also what kind of gas are you running? for the extra 2.00 bucks a tank, the middle grade gasoline will give you a bit of an increase.
when is the last time you gave a it a tune up?
plugs,
wires
cap & rotor
Air filter (K&N will help)
Fuel filter (often most overlooked tune up item)
and a bottle of fuel injector cleaner.
These are the basics of proper maintainence and will give you good gas mileage without spending gobs of money for that extra 2mpg's

RE: bad gas mileage!
little things add up...air pressure in the tires, make sure it is tuned up, air filter is clean, exhaust is good, keep the oil changed...
i have also read that 87 octane gas is best and all that is required for these engines. the higher octane gas runs hotter and burns faster, thus using more gas.

Just look in the manual. If the manual is telling you to use 87 octane, then use 87 octane. I tryed using premium (91 octane) in the dakota. Couldn't even tell the difference. The only thing I do is just go to canadian tire and buy some injector cleaner. That made a noticeable difference in performance and mileage. Why spend the extra 2$ at a tank if it really does nothing. Only time i'd fill with premium is if I was driving a higher end vehicle and it asks for it.
