true duals would suffice the optimum performance gain for your dakota. However, true duals will cost you a good bit more since you would be buying 2 mufflers, 2 cats, and then the piping...
if you plan on going with true duals though, i don't reccomend high flow cats, because it would be way too much air flow strain. You should stick with two replacement cats due to the fact that the dual piping will already split the airflow in half...

as for headers, that's up to you...

dont go with slowmaster try a magnaflow or hooker aerochamber for a muffler one in two out and run the duals 2.25 inch back to some 3 inch tips lol maybe add in a high flow cat and your set possibly a custom made y pipe if you like

This is the setup I have... but I went cheap and got a Flowmaster 50 muffler... Good way to go if you don't want to shell out an extra $200 +. Magnaflow and borla are good brands. Definately go for 3" tips though, they make the truck look so much more rugged.

Thanks for the advice so far, it has ben quite helpful in narrowing my search. and as for the cost of the upgrade, i'm not worrying about that, this is my baby, the most important factors are performance, sound and looks. been saving for this one for a while now so i can do it right, no skimping. i've already sacrificed 2 good GFs for this truck (one must show due respect LOL). and as mine is one of the last of the Reg Cabs, i want it to make a good showing.

I would go magnaflow. I paid $500 cash for a shop to bend up my exhaust from the Y pipe back. all in stainless.

i paid 135 for muffler and tips 200 to get it bent up and put on then another 175 for the cat and install i was stupid and didnt get them both done at the same time it probably wouldn't have been more than 500 total if i would have gotten it done at the same time. find a good reliable muffler shop to bend you some pipes dont get a kit unless you want mandrel bent or to do it yourself. magnaflow and the muffler i have are gonna be two of the highest flowing ones you can get for the best gains borlas are overpriced in my opinion and on the quiet side compaired to other mufflers.
