Default Coolant Problem

Noticed the engine was overheating. Checked the coolant reservoir, it was still full. Went ahead and checkedinside the radiator hose, no fluid. Pulled the hose out and there was no fluid inside the cavity where the thermostat sits and there was no fluid. In my experience there should be fluid there. I put the hose back on and poured some coolant in through the hose straight to the radiator to bypass the reservoir and the temp is fine now. Any suggestions on why this happened?

An air bubble in the radiator? You need to run it and allow it to bubble down otherwise your temp will jump alot.

You evidently have a leak some where. With the resivoir still full the system is getting air in. Maybe the rad cap icn't sealing good.

Change your radiator cap first.
Your system may not be under pressure? You'll know soon enough if you resolvedthe problem.

Moe in Wichita,KS. I read a story about one time when Chrysler changed the co. that made stats for them. the new co. was used to making very close tol. valves, and the stats they made for Chrysler were air tight. to get a cooling system to fill easly Chrysler engeners said to drill a 1/8 inch hole around the outer edge. i have done this for decades, with no trouble.
to seal the stat use permatex #2 put a small amount in the grove in the housing. and some on the other side side of the stat then put the gasket on. but not the side of the gasket that goes to the manafold. this keeps the sealant where its easer to clean the next time you take it apart.

The tstat could just need a replacing. I would start there, as it is less than $10. As moe said above, drill a small hole in the tstat to allow coolant to pass through. The bigger benefit to doing this is when filling your cooling system, you don't need to worry as much about air pockets getting stuck inside the cooling routing.

Thanks guys, the stat I removed seemed to be working fine, but i replaced it anyway. I flushed the whole system and put new fluid in straight into the radiator hose since the reservoir was still full and its working fine, for now anyway.

Usually if your cap is no good, it will cause the fluid to be sucked out of your system and into the reservoir. Which would be why your reservoir was full but not your system. Change the cap, then with the cap off, run the engine until at operating temperature, then top off the system to the rim, give the top radiator hose a couple of squeezes. Then put the cap back on and fill the reservoir to the fill mark.
I'm not an expert, just acting on experience and advise I got from this website when it happened to me.
good luck
