Default Alright Dakota's.....

Looking at another truck, it's a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 Sport with 70k. Very nice truck, all the options and unique amber fire pearl color. I used to own a 98' dak (in sig) but that had the 5.2, i have always either had a 5.2 or 5.9 in my trucks so the 4.7 that is in this dakota is new to me.

1. This particular model has AWD, 4hi, and 4lo. AWD on a 2001 dakota???? Anybody have more information on that particular type of powertrain setup?

2. Model year 2001, would that have electronic throttle control?

3. What are some things to check for and look out for?

if by electronic trhottle control you mean cruise control it might, i was available all along i believe, the 4.7 is a great engine and i would check on the ball joint recall expecially

and yes the AWD powertrain was a vailable its not very common on these trucks but was offered its like part time, but the awd is for dry pavement instead of running 2wd and i beleive it drinks quite a bit more gas bc of the awd

I had an 01 4.7 Clubcab, and it would run with the R/T model with no problem..... quite a nice truck. Definitely would look at the tranny to see how its held up. My particular 01 had a silicone seal, and it busted.

Im driving that exact model right now. I love it. The I get around 20-25 mpg at 65, I second the transmission check and the ball joint problem. I have had nothing but great time with this particual model. I like it better than the V8 in my 97 for sure. It does run rich in the winter.

i love my 4.7 doesn't have tho low end grunt that the 5.2 does but seems to have a smoother more usuable powerband imo. and the gas mileage is way better. the tranny behind the 4.7 is more reliable than the one behind the 5.2 and 5.9 but still check it out before you buy it also since its the awd i would change that and the diff fluids if you do decide on it.i think you'll be very happy with the 4.7 and even though the awd will hurt your mileage a little it will still most likely get better gas mileage than a part time 4wd 5.2. good luck

yup i agree w/ all but the powerband compared to a 5.2 bc i have never driven a 5.2 so i cant comment but the 4.7 is def a good engine and will last you a while there are a few around me w/ well over 125000 on them that are still running

have the same setup but an '00 and love it... mines also an AWD tranny and your able to swap it out for a jeep 242D trans case that offers 2hi on top of the AWD setup.

Transmission, bearing noise in the axles... mine has a little but it's not bad. $450 bux to swap each out. There is a percieved sludge problem relating to condensation buildup at the oil fill tube, there is a TSB on it to replace the cap & adds a screen IIRC, looks like butterscotch pudding in the fill tube when you pop the oil fill cap. I'm told it's nothing to worry about, I have the problem and have yet to put the TSB fix in place and I have no problems. oil on the dipstick looks fine and the motor runs awesome.

Would the transmission behindthis 4.7 have auto-adjusting bands ?

steve- that's a good bit of information on the tcase, that would be something i would seriously considerdoing eventuallyif i decide to get this vehicle.

well i bought a dakota sport with the 4.7L and it has an amazing 174,500 miles on it and the only thing that had been done to it is a lil head work... a valve seat came out and it was done like 2 months ago...my cousin thinks that head problem is because the strait pipe exhaust (no muffler and cat) the tranny has a bit of a rear seal leak but im wanting to replace the tranny with a 5-speed manual when the motor goes so i can replace/rebuild everything

I think I'm in error however... I think its a 242J, not the D. I think I have the D in mine.
