Just bought my neighbor's 2000 Dakota quad cab 4x4. Its sitting up in Anchorage with a toasted transmission.
Why are Dodges so hard to research? I'm about wore out just trying to find out what tranny it has in it. Been a Chevy man and they are easy to research.

Any way interesting debate. Mine has the 5.9L in it and I "WISH" it was either the 5.2 or the 4.7 you guys are debating over.

Only paid 1300.00 for it so I'm not complaining to loudly...114K on it. If I can find some one to tow it down to Washington for expenses I will go that rout...other wise I will be flying up rebuilding it and driving it down...I have family in Anchorage anyway thats the only reason I did it. Wife was born and raised up there and we have never drove the trip together so it would be fun to do anyway.

FWIW the 318 was the first engine I ever rebuilt in High School Auto shop..More years ago then some of you have been alive I imagine....it holds a special place in my heart for that reason I suppose.

Carry On

It is easy if you know where to look. It should have the 46RE for the 5.9, as long as it's an automatic and follows the same trend as the Durangos where 5.2=44RE, 5.9= 46RE, and 4.7=45RFE.

Actually send your vin into the dodge contact. They email you back within a day or two with a detailed build sheet of your whole truck.

As for the continuing discussion. I will trade trucks with you. Have my truck and I'll take your 5.9.

As for opinions 5.2 gets my award, I buy my trucks to use them as trucks. If I got to do it over again an extended cab, 4x4, 5.2, manual, 3.92 gears, 9.25" rear axle, would be my choice.

I own a 4.7, I currently just don't like it, I feel like I have to rev all the time for torque. It would make for a great commuter engine like and suv but as a truck engine it just doesn't work for me. If I drive it like a I want I get 10 mpg around the suburbs. If I go really soft I get 11.4. The truck is less fuel efficient then the hemi in my old 04' durango.

That's interesting. I have 4.7 in my Durango and I get 11.5 when I get on it. But I can roast both tires and my truck pulls hard (for its size and power at least - it doesn't match up like my Titan did) going up hills and loaded down with camp gear.

I got the build sheet last year. 4.7 w/ 9.25 3.55 rear with 4x4

And I agree. 5.9

Well maybe I will be happy with it then...

I have a 5.3 in my Serra 1500 4x4 and it gets 14 pulling 4 guys a 14' boat and a boat full of gear over east of the mountains and back. What do I know of such things dodge.... Maybe this will be my first and last.

^thats a lie.

We have a fleet of GMC trucks 01 to 2012. I have never done a fuel report and see those kinds of mileage numbers with a crew of four and a loaded trailer.

Too bad cause they are nice trucks.

We make the trip every year ..year in and year out for 10 plus years now...the numbers never change. I have absolutly no reason to lie or to prove anything.
