Default No first gear?

I bought a used dakota with a 3.9 and auto transmission. The last few days the thing will not go into first gearwhen Istop. It feels like the truck is taking off in second gear or maybe even 3rd. I can manually shift it into first but it won't go on it's own.

Any ideas about what's going on?

I would guess the front band is shot... or torque converter ..

i would say 1500 + might as well do a heavy rebuild which will run you $2000+
