Front Driveshaft-CV joint
I have an 01 Dakota 4x4 and found that my front driveshaft has a joint gone bad. It's the joint at the rear of the front shaft (Against the transfer case) I can hear it making a clicking noise while in 2WD because the front wheels still turn the shaft, and when in 4WD can really hear the clicking almost like something is slipping. It's not the Transfer case beacuase I just swapped one in on thursday night from a truck with 53,000 Km's (flushed it good first) Mine was making nasty noises while shifting from 2WD to 4WD. Back to my question, Today I took out the front driveshaft completely, and the noise is gone. So it deffinatley is the joint against the the transfer case. I have done some research and found that it is not a normal U-joint, but it is a type of CV joint. Is this possible to change myself, or do I have to take it to a driveline shop? Or is it cheaper to just find a new one or a used one? Has anyone else been in the same boat as me? What did this cost? Attached is a picture of what I'm taking about. The joint is number 2.
