Is there a deadline to respond to a recall

For about 5 days now I have noticed what many of you are already aware of....
That cracking pop sound is starting up front from both sides of my truck... Ithappens when turning, over speed bumps, in reverse or forward - just doesn't matter. So I have to assume since there was a recall way back when thatthis is related to the ball joints. So I called the Dodge hotline for recalls... Gave them my VIN and they responded by saying, my vehicle does not have any current recalls outstanding - which is strange because Ireceived thatnotification in the mailforthe defective transmission locking mechanism about 2 or 3 months ago -I decided not to address that issue becauseIdon't have a problem with it.
Anyway-
Are any of you people aware of a recall expiring. Do I have toreplace the joints myself? If I do, I will need recommendations about replacement parts. I am a die hard do-it-yourself guy...
Thanks!

Ok here is what i found out a couple weeks ago I will try to explain all detals to help you out. My truck is 8 years old and has 63k on it. I had the dodge dealer inspect the ball joints(long story why i was there) and they told me they were exsevaly worn(sp?) and they would replace them for free. I asked why and they said that the dakotas have an unlimited year 100k mile warenty on the upper ball joints.
The ball joint recalls are for the 4X4 and i have the 2 wheel drive.
I would take it to a dodge dealer[:@] and have they should replace it for free.

Under warranty still? Does anyone know if there is a way to follow up with the dealership or inquire about the extended warranty on the balljoints? When I called the 'Dodge Recall' phone number they didn't mention anything about an extended warranty. hmmm.... I will call the dealership and find out what they say - Thanks for the tip.
Mine had now recall just what they said was an extended warenty. My dad(he got the truck new) aparently recieved a letter years ago that said it had a 100k warenty. I still find it hard to believe.
you can check the recalls on the dodge site. maybe the person entered the wrong vin or didnt read it right or something then you can know for sure if it has any recalls or not. its under owners at dodge.com

The recall only does apply to 4x4 dakotas and durangos. However, there is a extended warranty on the upper balljoints of 2wd vehicles as well. I'm going to have to get mine in the shop at work to have mine replaced before the warranty runs out.
To answer your question however, there is no deadline to have a recall done. I have done some on vehicles pre-95 vehicles even

If it'sa safety recall, it does not expire, formiles or time. As stated above, sometimes Dodge will issue "quiet" extended warranties on stuff, and those would expire depending on the terms of the warranty. You probably need to have a dealer look at the truck and diagnose the problem. If it is ball joints, they may be covered...either by the safety recall or by an extended warranty. They may have already been replaced once, under the recall. In that case, that's why they might have said there are no outstanding recalls for your truck.
take your truck to the dealer, ask them to run any recalls/TSBs
i did and got a free catylitic converter (not that it matters now) and they reprogrammed my diagnostics computer (the reason i went)

maybe a little off subject.....but i hear if you have a custom flash, and take your truck to the dealer, they will flash it and overwrite your custom flash. Anyone know if this is true?
