Default no shift selector light

I guess I will try this again as when i posted last week, some maniac infected the website and my blog was scrubbed.
I have a 01 dakota 4x4 (bought new)with a 45RFE trans, NV233 transfer case, and a 4.7 engine.have 165,000 miles on it and have maintained the vehicle myself except for the faulty rear end and ball joints (recall). I have been dealing with a 4x4 electrical problem for about a year now. started out intermittent and now is full inoperative. Get no light on the shift selector switch followed by a "service 4WD" warning on the instrument panel. Unable to shift into 4 hi, 4 lo or neutral. Tranny and transfer case has been serviced at proper intervals. verified it is not a burnt bulb as the truck is truley stuck in 2WD. The auto zone computer checker comes up with not fault codes. Took to a tranny guy and he put a snap-on computer checker on it and again no fault codes. as stated earlier, started out intermittent. Sometimes it seemed like a weather change I.E. rain, cold temps would bring the operation back for a day or so, then inop again. Have also disconnected the battery for a computer reset ( i was told that was the proceedure to reset the computer) to no avail. During the life of the truck have used the 4x4 occasionally and the neutral function quite frequently as i tow the truck behind my rv. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated as this is putting a hamper on my Eastern Sierra fishing trip.

Sounds like a wire leading to the switch or to the motor. I would check all the wires look for fuses and relays.

Thanks Chris, at least it's a start. Which motor are you refering to? Would that be something in the transfer case?

Since you don't have a lever in the floor the transfer case has a motor which shifts it for you rather than manually... they sometimes fail.
