Default front differential question

So my 01 is awd all the time, is there an adaptor that enables me too pull the front driveline, and that piece would insert into the transmission so it does not leak. Then I will have rear wheel drive, and when I need to pull my boat or go camping I can just change that piece out and put the driveline for the front back in?? Not sure if this is possible because of the way the internals work but would like to do this if it is. Thanks for help and comments

the transfer case will not leak if you remove the front drive shaft. there is a six bolt flange that the drive shaft bolts to on the t- case. you will see what i mean when you get under there.

For anyone curious, this does not work, just tried it and with my 01 5.9 with auto trans and the awd, the fronts are what keeps yoru vehicle stopped in park, and also what moves your in reverse, as far as going forward it didn't do much either, to get the truck to even move I had to put it in 4hi, kinda of a bummer but oh well i guess.

oh sorry about that, yes it does have to be put in 4 hi to move the truck. the awd t-case is normally front wheel drive untill it senses the wheels slipping then it engages the rear wheels.

I have to dissagree with Shadow on the AWD transfer case, its not as smart as all that! Instead of a dog-clutch to engage the front drive-shaft, the AWD t-case has a standard (open) diff that splits the torque 50:50 at all times. If any wheel spins, it acts like any normal diff and sends the power to the spinning wheel/axle.The reason the car won't move without the front (or rear) drive-shaft removed is that in 4Hi, the centre diff will just send power to the flange without the shaft on it! To get drive (or to keep the car stopped in Park!)you will have to move the lever/switch to 4Hi-Locked. This will lock the centre diff and send power to the whichever shaft is still remaining. I think there would be a fuel saving, as there will be fewer parts turning, unlike a part-time 2/4WD system when all the shafts turn regardless of whether they are powered or not. My only worry would be the extra strain put on the locking mechanism. I really can't say how long it would last if used constantly, it may be fine or only be designed for the few times that most people ever take their trucks off-road.
The choice is yours!

Hi Shadow,
Is yours AWD or selectable from 2WD to 4WD? If its selectable then I agree that it won't do any harm and will save some gas. If its AWD, then they build them better than I thought!
