Default Off-road?

I have a 99 2wd, and I was told that it would probaly get stuck right away because it's really a one wheel drive because only one wheel spins

Is this true?

Its a little confusing at fist. But both wheels do move the truck. When you make a turn one wheel needs to move faster than the other. So they have gears that give power to the wheel with less traction. So if your stuck yes only one will spin. But on pavment going strait both will power. If you need a better explantion go to howstuffworks.com and type indiffental gears.

You can off-road a 2wd just bring a friend just in case. I had a fiend who had an 85 blazer and he rarely used 4wd unless it was a new mud hole or he wasnt sure about something.

As stated, if one wheel is off the ground, then yes, all power will go to the unloaded wheel. And you're not doing REAL 4-wheeling unless you get at least one wheel off the ground!

What you need is momentum. And I'm not talking about barreling down a trail at 25 MPH, I'm talking about keeping the truck moving as you move over obstacles and as your suspension articulates. If you stop in the middle of an obstacle, you WILL lose forward traction, and you'll have to back up and start over.

Your worst enemy in having a 2WD truck is ground clearance (in general). Taller tires make a pretty big difference in being able to clear stuff on the trail.

here's a lot of good info, including an animation of the spider gears in action.
