Hi DocZ,

I will try this as soon as I can. I heard from another guy that it could be the u-bolts (u-joints) on that as he had a similar problem.

Thanks,

It could be them.
You'll be able to feel them when you hold the shaft and have someone rock wheel while engine is off, you'll feel exactly where the play is located.
Grease helped removal almost all of the noise in my truck and friends but we're still changing the shaft. It's just nice to know that you're changing the right part first time out..lol

I have recently fixed the problem with the knocking/popping in my wheel. It turns out that Dodge TSB 19-05-99 deals with realigning the steering column with the system. After the alignment, my issues were resolved.

I had a 98 and because I worked at the Van plant for Chrysler and there was an issue with the u joints in the shaft and my 98 dakota was making the same little rattle noise and seemed to not be their sometimes. I took it to the dealer and told them what to look for they changed the intermediate shaft...in fact there was a TSB or maybe even a recall for that.

Its the intermediate steering shaft, my 98 and my 2000 both had them replaced almost as soon as I got them, could feel a weird jiggle in the steering wheel.
