Default code: 1762

I recently have had some idle and city driving problems. At low R's it may bog sometimes and even pop every now and then. This only happens if im only going about 20-25mpg through town. On the highway shes fine. I replaced the spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor. Just tonight ( while looking at a new truck lol ) my check engine came on I looked up the code - 1762 and it says it is a governor position sensor i believe. Any info on to what this is? Does it have anything to do with my recent problems?

Thanks.

Found at: http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl235g.htm

P1762 - Governor Pressure Sensor (GPS) Offset Volts Too Low Or High. This code will set if the governor pressure is out of range in Park or Neutral for 1.3 seconds. Three consecutive bad 3.0 second tests and sump temperature is greater than 50° F and less than 260° F are required to set the code.

Some of the possible causes are:

* Transmission fluid level and condition
* Powertrain Control Module
* Sensor ground circuit open
* Intermittent GPS signal
* 5 volt supply circuit open inside transmission
* GPS ground circuit open inside transmission
* Bad GPS

There is little you can do to troubleshoot the system with out a Chrysler DRB scan tool. There are some voltage and resistance tests you can do and I would suggest looking in the Motors Transmission Manual for the proper procedures. You can find the Motors Transmission Manual in the Reference Section of your local Public Library.

Check your wires around the transmission, there is either 2 or 3 black wires that will run down by your transmission. Not sure if they are transmission grounds, but check them. But I believe they are. They go around to a plug, and usually run farther down the transmission. Next would be to drop the pan and replace the sensor, or bring it in for the DRB. But I think that they won't tell you too much.

BUMP because i just got this code today.

I found the sensor on Napaonline at $95. Should i replace any other easy to access sensors while im in the trans? Thinking I should do a shift kit too while im there. Rockauto has a cheap one i may try.

Also, for the OP, did replacing the sensor fix it for you?

FYI - the symptom my truck has is that it will not ever downshift to 1st. Its starting out in 2nd every time. this really sucks!

Just because the code appears once, doesn't mean something is wrong. Reset the code, and drive it normally, give it atleast 50 miles and go from there.
It is normal for this sensor to go foul, but when something goes wrong with our trucks, it is normal for all kinds of foul codes to be thrown. If you can get your hands on a mt-2500, or any high end scanner, you will actually be able to read the pressure that the sensor is reading. You can compare this to what the FSM recommends.,Target line pressure is 127 but actual is 80. Did you check the spool valves inside the valve body?

yeah i had a buddy come over with his nice Snap On scan tool. We cleared the code and it came back right away. Twice. We didnt look at the pressure but rather the voltage. It was all over the place.

Update:

I replaced the sensor last weekend and it did the trick. It really is easy.
Drop the pan and you can see the sensor. You can't just pull it out, you have to remove the part its in via some torx bolts and some regular 6 point bolts. Then carefully peel back the gasket, and pull out the retaining clip.

Ohh and it took 5.5 quarts to fill her back up.

Hi! I've had the engine light come on twice. Friend checked the code with a scanner and couldn't clear it, so I disconnected the battery, he he he, and it went away for a week. Tranny is slipping a little bit, fluid level is fine, had it flushed in Feb '09, and now the light is on again! I can't afford repairs of $1000 plus. IS this something I can do on my own with a manual in my driveway? AHHHH!!!!!

I've a 2004 Dakota Quad SLT, 8cyl. 4.7. 81k miles.

Thanks!
