there's a stick on top of the 2nd gen dakota forum for check engine light codes.. just for future reference

P0442 (M) Evap Leak Monitor Meduim Leak Detected A small leak has been detected in the evaportive sysem.

start off by replacing your gas cap, another common issue with our trucks.

check all your evap system lines. they run from the charcoal canister by the fuel tank up to the evap pump directly behind the driver side headlamp.

I am going to make this as simple as it can get for you... 99.999% of the time, that code means bad gas cap... its cheaper to buy a new one then to have it tested...

Actually, if the trucks I have worked on at the dealership are any indication, I have only had to replace one or two gas caps, and probably 20 or 30 hose harnesses for cracked hoses at the canister.

yeah, when my buddy had the medium detection leak on his '02 dakota, the line right after the evap pump was all dry rotted. i also forgot to mention a gas cap will throw off a small leak detection code, possibly a medium leak though. all the ones ive seen on this forum for small leaks were the gas caps. good luck buddy

I gotta go check mine. Lights been on since the summer. Bought a generic gas cap and the code went from small leak to medium leak. changed back to original cap and code has not changed. If my hoses are bad, where other than dodge do you get them and how much?
