Default New (used) 2002 Quad Cab 4x4...key questions

Hello to all in the forum...

Last week I bought a 2002 Quad Cab 4x4 w/ the 5.9 in it. It was in fantastic shape with less than 56,000mi on it.

The truck only came with one set of keys (one key & keyless entry fob), and of course I want to get a couple spares. My local Dodge dealer was going to charge me $70 for a transmitter and key, then another $70 to program them.

Reading the owner's manual I see if I buy the proper p/n fob online I can program it myself as I currently have a programmed fob. I'll probably pick one up on eBay for 1/3 the price of a new one from the cheapest local dealer....but I'm concerned about the actual key.

I don't think I have any fancy special "Sentry" key, but I'm not sure how to verify that. If NOT, can't I just use any aftermarket cut key?

Thanks!

yeah i have an 01 and sometimes use a key that was cut at lowes and it works great. i have heard about being able to program your own keyless entry clickers but i have no idea how to do it. but basically to answer your question, you do not need to get a "chipped" key as you do in some fords and many chevys

I have noticed on some of the other vehicles in the chrysler family that had the sentry key as an option, the sentry key is covered in grey rubber instead of the regular black.

Just another way for them to make money.

I have an 02 and got mine cut at a local hardware store. It works good for the most part.
