Default Replace fan clutch, and HOWLING noise

Hi,

I'm new to this site, and have searched threads to see if someone else has my problem.

I have a 2002 dakota SXT 3.9 V6

I replaced the fan clutch on it over the weekend. took old clutch off, unbolted fan, then put fan on new clutch, and re-attached to the engine.

Started truck, and get a huge "wind moving" howling noise. I shut the truck off thinking i was a dummy for installing the fan backwards, but this id not the case. I restarted the truck, rev the engine a few times, and the howling air sound goes away.

I worry I have either a new bad clutch, or i have accidentaly bent a fan blade when moving things around. All my bolts are tight.

Any advise would be appriciated.

Thanks,

A

nope thats normal when you start it up after its been stitting for a while(for ex. overnight)

as long as it goes away rather shortly after starting its fine both our trucks have done this since new your just not used to it bc your bad fan clutch did NOT do it

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. My fan clutch is a replacement purchased at advanced auto parts.

The noise itself lasts for approximately 3 to 4 minutes. I barely hear it at idle. When i rev the engine it becomes very noticable. Once i get thru a few gears going down the road it goes away.

Is the noise from the fan clutch itself? Will buying a bigger fan clutch overcome this?

I did buy the truck used with 40,000 miles on it. If the factory fan clutch never made that noise does that mean it should have?

Thanks, and your answers / advise are greatly appriciated.

I would say yes they should do that. I've owned 4 dakotas, both 6 and 8 cyl. they have all done that when cold. Sounds like airplane taking off for a few blocks. Is your engine running cooler?

That's it! thats the sound! Like an airplane taking off. I dorve it yesterday to work. Normally I drive my girlfriends G6, as she works way closer to home than I do. Makes more sence for her to drive the guzzler.

When I started it up, I noticed the "airplane" noise. I didn't wait for too long for warm up, and took off. By the time i hit 3rd gear I noticed the noise had gone away.

I didn't even bother to look to see if it was running cooler. I'll check that out right away.

Why does it seem like slightly at full operating temperature the engine performs like that of a 4 cylinder?

Any quick mods to get a more productive engine out there. (non-hemi)?

Thanks again,

A

How many miles are on your truck? It shouldn't performe worse when it warms up. A cia filter helps move more air through. plugs might need changed, I just added NGK Iridium plugs to mine and that woke it up qiet a bit. Not sure what kind of fuel filter yours has but could be time to change it, clogged filter takes away a lot of power.

cant change the filter dodge decided that putting the filter IN the pump was a good idea and the pump is inside the gas tank so that would be a PITA if you dont HAVE to do it

umm yes the fan sound is normal mine does it until it starts shifting, and so does my dads, and so did his old one and so did my old one (both v8s and v6s)
