I didn't know Dakota's came with a shift on the fly T-case. Anyway, I've always found the T-case's (in most situations, don't disengage immediately anyway.) (Experience, Not fact, don't criticize.) I've always been told after I shift out of 4wd mode, to back up a little to disengage the gears. Don't know if this helps, or if anyone will criticize. Again, just my $0.02.
