I keep getting the same code. My code reader is saying the vehicle speed sensor is not operating. I have replaced it once dont want to again. Any ideas as to what it might be

Thanks

Is that the sensor that's back on the rear axle or close to it?

The "code reader" doesn't tell you anything about what part is malfunctioning.
It simply states the problem system and it is up to you to follow the proper diagnostic tree to find out which is the failed part.
A code that states "Output Speed Sensor No Signal" simply means that no speed signal is being received by the TCM or PCM. Could be the sensor, could be the wires, could be an internal TCM ground..........
You must diagnose, not just replace parts.

On your truck you actually have 2 sensors. One in the rear end and one in the back end of the trans. I've seen both go bad a million times. Beware however, I've also seen both of them not read right due to shards of metal stuck to the tip of the sensor, normally caused by a failing trans or rear end. Get it checked out properly.

ok

the sensor i replaced was the one in the tranny. I pulled the old one out and it had a bit of build up on it since the truck did sit for nearly two years. Once i pulled the old one the light went off for about 50 miles then came bck on. The next morning the light went bck off. that evening after getting the truck inspected the light came bck on. One thing i have noticed is that the speedo doesnt start working until i hit about 35-45 mph. Any ideas what could cause that. If its in the wiring what do i need to chase a signal with.

The on again off again is starting to sound like a bad wire or loose connection. My buddy had a split rear dual exhaust put on his and when he hit a bump the exhaust was too low and hit the sensor on the rear end and cracked it. Since you have dumps I wouldn't think the rear end one would be broke, but make sure the connector is on good and look at the sensor real good. His was doing that where it would work, and then shut off, and then work again.

Whats really bumfounding me is that the speedo doesnt quiet work right. I havent had time to check the sensor in the bck on the axle yet but maybe thats the one thats bad. Who knows? Only the computer does. Anyways thanks for the help. Im probally gonna have it checked out by the local speed shop since they are the cheapest and probally can help the most anyway.

is there a 'code reader' that can be purchased? my MIL light has been on for about 2 weeks, and i am hesitant to take it to the dealership and pay 11-teen hundred dollars to find out it may have a gasket cracked somewhere. Any suggestion on where to get a reader or how to find the code any other way? I tried the whole key-in-ignition-while-pushing-the-trip-reset-****- thing and have had no success... i appreciate the advice though

If there is an Autozone in your area they do it for free.
