Is it backfiring through the carb/TB or the exhaust? Don't know if it will matter, but usually my mechanic says that if pops back through the carb then it is the valves, although we only work on motorcycles, so it may be different. Hope somebody comes up with some ideas for you.

do you let off the gas before you shift?
if the pedal gives you a slight kick, means its coming out of the TB so your valves need adjusted,
if not, its coming out of the exaust. not sure what causes it really, mine does it, louder now with the bigbore TB. its extra fuel that dosnt have a chance to burn in the cylinders so it burns on the way out,

my bet would be...... well, honestly im not sure, i've done just about everything to this truck except timing and its still there. i dont mind it, (maybe im just too abusive.)

could be worn out valve springs at 250k i wouldnt be surprised, mines got 115k but its had a rough life.

it back fires thru the throttle body. the engine runs great! no smoke/ taping/ leaking oil or anything. my mpg hasent changed any ether, about 400 mile to a tank, it cost me 25$ to fill all the way up so im not complaning! it doesnt bother me that it does that cause i rarly go over half throttle in it, i would like to figure out what is wrong with it but im not going to touch it till something breaks. it will probley have 300k or more till that happens. when it does i got a 318 with a 5spd waiting for her. all i need is a wireing harness from a 1500 series that is similar to my truck.

how the hell do you not go over half throttle?
takes me like 5 minutes to get to 60 wide open.
the only problem i have is an exuast leak at the mani.
