ye aeven if it did pick up more dirt, the filter int he line would stillb e there so it wouldnt get to the engine, and it would still have to go UP in order to get to the engine too somost of it would be dropped by gravity before it even gets to the filter, it could work and id dod it if i didnt need fog lights.

(EDIT: might need to change the air filter more often but thats not a big deal)

Well if he does any winter driving that thing would be clogged all the time. The roads are covered in sand and salt, plus you know how much water sprays on the front of your vehicle following another car, well all that water would be going on the filter. Im not saying he is going to blow up his motor due to it, but I still don't think its a great idea, especially if he does any winter driving at all.

You dont have to worry bout crap getting sucked up cause if you have a vertical anything that would be big and worrisome is to heavy to get to the filter. Real live experience in my friends VW jetta. You would notice a performance gain and the extra dirt is not as noticable as you might think. Plus if you do this you should get a K&N and they get cleaned not replaced so its a double bonus in my mind

what kind of performance gains would be achieved with the air having to travel that far? would it be practical for everyday driving?

yeah it would give you a lot colder air. colder air = more dense = more power. if you were to replace the stock air box with full metal tubes/pipes the air moves a lot freeer and therefore you are getting more air in there.

If you make it fairly free flowing it makes a good difference. Your keeping air at the ready by forcing it to the TB. When moving air is being forced thru the pipes so the distance doesnt matter as much. I have done this to a lesser extent on a car and it made a difference then too.
