Default Knock sound from rear of engine

Hi, new to this and I couldn't find any threads on this. The knock is a low muffled sound coming from around the back of engine. It's a v-6 gasoline auto trans. I checked under and nothing is loose. Any suggestion before I pay lots of money to a shop for this. thanks

its coming from the engine or trans area. the muffler does have a drain hole in it, but no other hole

You've never heard/seen of a drain hole in the muffler? You might wanna go look at them at the parts store.

i would think a drain hole in the muffler would be bad ? air leak causing that sound i have seen alot of mufflers never seen one with a hole in it that had a purpose

No, they have holes in the muffler to let water out, so it causes less of a rust problem for it.

I'm sure he knows the difference between a drain hole and a legitimate hole, since he specified it was a drain hole.

tj_110, you might want to try to figure out where the sound is coming from. you said back of the engine or maybe transmission area. Can you crawl around and try to figure out which one?
