Newbie has rear bumper question
Hi Everyone!
Glad I found this site! I'm a female who likes to do as much repair/maintenance as I can on my truck but usually need some helpful hints. Also, if I have to take it to the mechanic, I like to have knowledge of the problem so that they think I know what I'm talking about. I hope all of you Dodge experts out there will help me out from time to time if I need it.
At the moment, I'm looking for a replacement bumper for my 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. The entire middle section is rusted and rotting out where the hitch ball is. I would first like to ask if anyone knows a good place to get a rear bumper? Second, do I have to buy OEM? Third, it is a chrome bumper with gray pieces and I need to know what these gray pieces are called. They are the same color cray as the front bumper cover.
Thanks for any info you might send to me! It is greatly appreciated!

first of all, welcome to the forum. its nice to have a lady around here, hopefully we dont scare you off. getting to the point, I know exactly what you're talking about. my 01 SLT has a chrome rear bumper and its rusted in the same spot, except it doesnt sound like its as bad. There are all kinds of places to find bumpers. salvage yards are a good start. also, try ebay. alot of people buy rear rollpans to replace the bumper and end up selling the bumper. you could also just replace it with a rollpan. as a last resort you could probably order a new bumper from a dealer. Oh, and i believe those pieces on the bumper are called "step pads". they are black on my truck. Also, dont be afraid of a little surface rust on the bumper. Obviously if yours is rusted through it wont work but if you happen to find one with a little rust on it, you can get if off with steel woll, then get some chrome polish and polish the crap out of it. Its also a good idea not to keep a ball on the bumper, they only cause it to rust faster and they're pretty much worthless anyway. you dont want to put anything over 500 pounds on the ball.

i have a 2000 qc with a black/white rear bumber that i can sell ya....so i can buy a roll pan
Hi Wink, thanks for the welcome! I think I'll probably wait for warmer weather (only 9 here today) and go around to a few salvage yards before buying a brand new one. I've been looking on ebay and they do sell them but not really at a discount. I'll keep looking around.
I think the part I'm talking about that is gray on the bumper is called the face pad. The step pads are black and they are on the top. Don't have any pictures yet but wish I did.
Yes, the bumper does have a ball on it. Are they really worthless? We have a pop-up trailer that weighs 3000 pounds. Will we need to install a trailer hitch? I thought that was what the ball was for
. Oh oh.....
Thanks for all the info! I appreciate it!

welcome to the forum, dont mind loud pedal, not a first time he hears about a girl on the forum, hits on them and get shot down. hopefully he didnt scare you away.
as for the trailer hitch, go for it. i use mine for towing and as a bumper guard. mine saved my rear when i was rear ended at a traffic light. left the receiver ball in the hitch, took the whole impact. trashed the bumper on the chevy suv.

im just playin.....welcome to the forum!!!
oh, yea my bumper has that gray facepad too. it really doesnt matter unless you want it to look exactly the same, they'll all fit on the same way. and i would never put 3,000 pounds on the bumper, thats just asking for trouble. im surprised it didnt get bent down or just ripped off. A hitch would let the truck sit at a better angle too.

thats a pic of my 88 dakota. if you notice the bumper is hanging about 3-4 inches down from where it should be. thats what happens when you put too much weight on a bumper. It was like that when I got it, and its not worth replacing.
