Hey,
My dakota r/t has done that since it was new. I just got over the anoyying issue by not using the cruise control. Thats when mine was doing that.

I have the same problem with 2000 dakota 4.7. This happens when I'm pulling a light trailer on the highway. Does anyone know if this is normal or what the problem may be?

I had issues with my 04 Dakota 4.7 and I had to go to the dealer with it three times. Almost thought I had a lemon but alas I was wrong. The problem with mine was that it would hold in third gear, then when I would stop at a red light and I hit the gas when the light was green, it was still in third gear. Problem was the Valve Control Body. They have replaced it at 10,000 miles and no problems since. Hope this helped, maybe this is your issue as well?

usually, what you have when a transmission is shifting back and forth between gears it is just the computer programming. basically the computer is getting input from the sensors and telling the trans to shift. then, after the upshift thje sensor inputs change due to changing engine load, rpm, etc and the computer thinks it needs to downshift. all computer controlled trans do this at certain steady speeds. i work on Lexus vehicles and they all do it at certain speeds. you just need to adjust your cruising speed up or down 2-3 mph and the problem will probably go away. the only way to avoid it in modern cars is to get a car with a CVT trans which to my knowledge only honda has and the nissan murano(yuck).
