Default Manual trans differences Help

I have a buddy with a 99 or 00 2.5 4x2 5speed. From what I gather this is the AX-15 trans. Well 5th gear in it is screwed. I'm thinking about buying the car from him cheap and want to eventually swap to another engine 2.4 DOHC. First I'm trying to figure out what will be better/cheaper to fit the current one and hoping that it was also bolt to the 2.4. I'm told that Jeeps owners can upgrade their ax-15 to the NV3550 and I'm told that people using the 2.4 in RWD can use the NV1500 or the NV3500. I'm hoping that stars and planets align and I can use the NV3500 for both. Any chances that this is the case.

the 2.4 from a neon? that doesnt sound right to me, since the neon is fwd and the truck is rwd and the engine would be mounted vertical, vs. the engine being mounted horizontally in the neon...

chances that everything will go your way and work out easily = pretty much zero.

what i would do is try and get links from the guys that have already done this and go from there.

FWD/RWD there's usually not much of a difference in most engines. Nissan is one of the few that it makes different blocks for. Anyway Neon/Stratus/Liberty it's all basically the same but liberty is RWD.

IDK...a transaxle is a completely different design...I don't think it would be worth it. I'd just say put a 3550 in it and call it done.

or just swap in a V6 or V8, granted the engine mounts will be different... then you can put in the 3500 and have a blast!

yeah and if your going to swap to a 3.9 you might as well go with a 5.2/5.9 same mpg but a ton more torque and power... well the 5.9 might get a little less but the 5.2 is about the same. I don't think i would swap another 2.4 in... I thought my 3.9 was slow lol
