and you are right, the rear wheel speed sensor is more than likely your problem. I thought it was mounted on the rear end, but i could be wrong.... ive never had to replace mine.

On the 1st gen 4x4 dakotas the speedometer sensor is in the transfer case. I don't know if they changed it for gen 2 but I'd check there first.
there are two speed sensors on these trucks, one on the output shaft of the transmission, and one on the rear differential, either one could be bad and causing the problem, the one that is on the transmission is cheaper, and easier to get off. this one is on the drivers side of the transmission near where the drive shaft goes into it, should be the only wire going to that side of the transmission
